Volcanoes National Park

Rwanda’s Crown Jewel of Gorilla Trekking

Volcanoes National Park

Nestled in the Virunga Mountains in northwestern Rwanda, Volcanoes National Park is the country’s most visited wildlife destination—and for good reason. The park is world-renowned as one of the few places on Earth where visitors can experience the rare and humbling opportunity to encounter endangered mountain gorillas in their natural habitat.

Home to 10 habituated gorilla families, the park allows only 8 visitors per group per day, ensuring minimal disturbance and a truly intimate wildlife experience. Gorilla trekking begins at 7:00 AM with a detailed briefing at the Kinigi Park Headquarters, followed by a guided hike through lush rainforest slopes led by experienced, armed rangers.

An encounter with mountain gorillas is often described as life-changing—a heart-stirring experience that connects visitors with a species so closely related to humans. Watching a silverback protect his family or juveniles tumbling through the foliage is a moment few ever forget.

Volcanoes National Park offers more than just gorilla trekking. Visitors can also enjoy golden monkey tracking, hiking Mount Bisoke or Karisimbi, visiting the Dian Fossey tomb, and exploring local cultural experiences in nearby communities.
